This was the first Cartier perfume for women, launched in 1981. It was part of Cartier’s renaissance, which had started in the sixties. After the death of the last of the founder’s nephews, the company was bought by a group of investors, and a new range of luxury products called “Les Must de Cartier,” was launched. The word “must” here is English, and it means “the Cartier perfumes you must have”.
The first version of this Must de Cartier perfume was a red refillable bottle covered with metal, which had the same shape of the Cartier lighter, another product of the same range. The principle here was that no Cartier product, not even a perfume bottle could be disposable, but had to become an object to keep. In the current bottle there is not any metal, but it keeps the same design, with more rounded angles.

Cartier Perfume

The tester for this Cartier parfume lists more ingredients than the web page. The main ones are: zalou root (such a rare plant that not even Wikipedia has an entry about it), jasmine, roses, wood, and vanilla.
The opening notes have a hint of slightly spiced vanilla, with secondary notes of mandarin. After a couple of minutes, it changes to a resinous floral, and after 15 minutes a non-soapy jasmine note shows up. The structure of this floral is very well crafted, mixed with ripe fruity notes like peach and redcurrant, on a base of sweet vanilla and some rose concentrated extract with a vintage style (nothing to do with rose water).
The base notes are of oriental vanilla, with some recognizable touches of aromatic wood. After 24 hours on the test paper, the resin has become more prominent than vanilla, with a light touch of incense.
Must de Cartier doesn’t follow the line of classic earthy chypre, typical of the fragrances from the seventies and eighties. All in all, this fragrance is younger than the brown bottle would lead to believe.
Maybe more suitable for the winter, it can be worn everyday. In the office it’s professional without smelling old.
It can be a night perfume, even if it’s not as intense as others, but it’s appropriate enough for a formal or semi-formal event. It’s not what I would call a seducing perfume, but it has a romantic side thanks to the vanilla and the iris notes, and to the resinous fruit, which make Cartier perfume suitable for romantic occasions between grown up people. Definitely not a perfume for teenagers, age range between 35 and 60 years.
